Pensioners defeated by home-repair costs
0 Comments | Medway News; Chatham (UK), Jul 22, 2010 | by Jim Palmer
A Retired couple hit by huge repair bills for their home have been forced sell up to recoup the cost.
Janet and Frank Bailey bought the bungalow in Kit Hill Avenue, Walderslade, in December 2006.
It had recently had a loft conversion completed. The work had a certificate of completion from Medway Council, issued in October of that year, so the couple did not bother with what they thought was an unnecessary survey.
Within days of moving in, problems emerged. Grandmother Mrs Bailey said: “Soon after we got in, when you flushed the en suite, the excrement came up through the hand basin.”
Mr Bailey, 74, a retired Industrial Cleaning Consultant, said: “The floor was glazed tiles so I had to smash up the tiles. I had to take out the whole shower unit and the tray before I could get a man in.”
The handrail on the stairs was also loose after having been drilled straight in to the plasterboard. It came off one day when 72- year-old Mrs Bailey grabbed hold of it. “She stumbled to the bottom of the stairs,” said Mr Bailey. “How dangerous is that?”
It was not until April 2007, when Mr and Mrs Bailey’s roof also needed completely re-tiling at a cost of Pounds 3,800 that the couple decided enough was enough.
The couple got in touch with Medway Council. “They said they put pressure on the developer to come and correct it,” said Mrs Bailey. “We did not hear anything.
“They just left us high and dry.”
The council sent a letter to the builder in November 2007 noting the faults

We’ve come a long way since our mothers straightened our hair with an iron and ironing board, and it has never been more evident than now. The Sedu hair straightener has revolutionized the way we straighten our hair and has proved that hair Sedu style is hair to be truly envious of.
Hair Sedu style is identified by sleek, straight, shiny and conditioned tresses, the likes of which can only be obtained by using the Sedu ceramic flat iron. This flat iron infuses hair with moisture during every step of the straightening process to ensure that hair Sedu style remains healthy, shiny, strong and vibrant.
The secret of hair Sedu style lies with ionic technology and the materials used to create the Sedu hair straightener. Hair Sedu style is achieved thanks to the high concentration of negative ions, which work to infuse moisture and shine into the inner layers of your hair.
The smooth ceramic plates of the Sedu ceramic flat iron also work like no other ordinary straightening iron to give you hair that is truly Sedu style.

I am very concerned with the line of thinking that leads to opinions such as Brian Bawden’s (“Socialists are like Nazis,” Readers’ Forum, July 25), wherein a legitimate and debatable philosophy such as liberalism is robotically compared to Nazism. Not only does the author sloppily label supporters of the recent health care legislation as socialists, by association he then blames them for 10 times as many deaths as the Third Reich. Letters of this quality are useless in the public debate and should never be printed by a newspaper looking to have a productive discussion on its opinion pages.
I am simply fed up with people demonizing other points of view. Are we so acrimonious that we must have someone to hate in order to get through the day? Are we so intellectually stunted that we have to compare current politicians and citizens to the worst dictators we learned about in our high school history class? I am tired of hearing that so-and-so is evil and destroying our country. I have had my fill of partisan sniping and the endless efforts to tear each other down. And I am really going to lose it if I keep hearing that so-and-so is like Hitler

The need for an understanding of life?s fluctuations couldn?t have been more apparent that in the past few weeks with the sad and needless deaths of children at several of our nations schools.
As my co-author Michael C. Kelley and I have discussed often recently, our world is rampant with sensationalism. Many of us tire of the news and have begun to tune out its daily grind of spoon-fed gruel consisting of terror, doom and gloom, sadness, and national and international threats of one catastrophe or another.
Anytime humans are constantly subjected to only negatives it wears on their collective psyche and anger, frustration and depression are the result. So often, the unfortunate recipients of those emotions are children.
Many want to blame our culture, but I beg to disagree. I think the news organizations can only see ratings when a tragedy has occurred and scurry to be the first to be more sensational than their peers.
At heart, our culture is kind, positive, philanthropic, and happy while going through their daily lives.

Don?t Forget the Rest of Your Physical Needs
Some of us use food as a all-in-one cure for exhaustion, sadness, anger, thirst, boredom and more. Your body needs more than food. It also needs sleep (at least 6-8 hours a day) and exercise. Don?t forget to indulge your other senses besides taste such as sight, sound, smell and touch. Look at art or nature, listen to music, light a scented candle or get a massage. Your craving to eat when you?re not hungry may be related to deprivation in other areas of your life.
9. Reclaim Your ?Me? Time
Is there a hobby you left in the garage? Dust off your tools and dig in the dirt. A little time alone or engaged in your favorite pastime can be so fulfilling that you actually forget about food. It?s almost impossible to engage in hobbies like gardening, crocheting, graphic design, sewing or writing and eat at the same time because your hands are too busy and you wouldn?t want to get dirt on your food or put your greasy fingers all over your project?would you?

But since the Persian ways were not the Macedonian ways, not all of his followers were keen to abandon the old ways to start new families in Persia.
They realized, of course, that in the eyes of Alexander, those who weren?t with him, must be deemed to be against him. Principles battled self interest, and then, as now, it was not long before principles fell by the wayside.
Alexander, of course, fully embraced the Persian life. It?s style suited him just fine. He loved the clothes, he loved his two wives, and he really went for the way people threw themselves on the ground when they addressed him.
His generals, after sulking in the corner for a while, decided what the heck. Numerous soldiers, with wives and children back home, happily took on one or more Persian wives to please their leader.
Alexander was extremely appreciative of their gesture.
